Microsoft is ending access for older versions of Outlook for Windows.
Starting 25th July 2022, Microsoft will be ending access for older versions of Outlook for Windows.
Why can I no longer use my version of Outlook for Windows?
To support ongoing changes to maintain security and reliability of email using Outlook, Microsoft will be ending support for older versions of the software and preventing the software to access its email tools. The changes are to prevent any vulnerabilities or exploits of the older software to be utilised.
The decision is not unusual and occurs with many software publishers as technologies change and developments continue.
Do the changes to Outlook for Windows affect me?
Changes will differ depending on the version of Outlook being used currently. The changes will most impact users who do not have an active, current Microsoft 365 plan.
Users of Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 will no longer be able to connect to Microsoft email servers. Access to email will remain by visiting Outlook.com or alternatively you will need to upgrade to an Office 365 plan.
Outlook 2013 or 2016 versions will still be able to connect to email services if all the latest updates have been applied. Check for updates using Microsoft Update in Windows or alternatively visit the Office Updates website.
What else should I know about Outlook updates?
By now you will likely have seen or received prompts to add multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA is recognised as an affective defence tool to prevent unauthorised access to your email accounts or many other applications and services that require login credentials to access.
Read our guide for more details on Multi Factor Authentication and its importance.
Users of older versions of Outlook and the associated email accounts who choose to instead not upgrade and continue to access via Outlook.com only may remain vulnerable due to not maintaining access to the latest security opportunities.
Some reports have shown that older business users who have continued to access through Outlook.com only or have only ever access through the website portal but have multi factor authentication in place may experience some problems. The issues have meant some users have been unable to access their accounts due to security conflicts and Microsoft no longer supporting their older format of email use.
Removal of MFA may seem a means to avoid any potential issue, but we do not advise doing so as can further expose your email vulnerabilities. Microsoft have advised that upgrading to an appropriate Microsoft 365 plan is the best option to ensure your email remains secure and will continue to have uninterrupted access while remaining the most secure.
